A gritty, romantic modern fairy tale from the author of Break and Gone, Gone, Gone.Be careful what you believe in.
Rudy’s life is flipped upside-down when his family moves to a remote island in a last attempt to save his sick younger brother. With nothing to do but worry, Rudy sinks deeper and deeper into loneliness and lies awake at night listening to the screams of the ocean beneath his family’s rickety house.
Then he meets Diana, who makes him wonder what he even knows about love, and Teeth, who makes him question what he knows about anything. Rudy can’t remember the last time he felt so connected to someone, but being friends with Teeth is more than a little bit complicated. He soon learns that Teeth has terrible secrets. Violent secrets. Secrets that will force Rudy to choose between his own happiness and his brother’s life.
This. book. is. so. weird. Tons of people already love this book, and you know what? I don't get it. I don't. At all. This book creeped me out, grossed me out, and weirded me out. I don't even know how to describe my feelings about it without giving away the story. The summary does not even begin to cover what this book is about. I went into it thinking it would be an awesome book, and was sorely disappointed. I also really disliked the amount of cussing in this book. It felt like the f word was used every other sentence. It was way too much. The only reason I gave it even two stars is because for some strange reason it kept me interested enough to keep reading.
Sorry I usually try to avoid spoilers, but I have to talk about this book. First, Teeth's mom (100% human) was raped by a fish (100% fish). Um WHAT?!? As if magic healing fish weren't enough, now they have to rape a human? I don't get it. Then Teeth is born, but just his top half. He doesn't get his merman tail until a few years later. Why wasn't he born with it? I don't get it. Then, Rudy starts to slowly fall in love with Teeth. First he was making out with Diana and now he likes guys? I don't get it.
Y'all. I just don't get it. Not much about this book made sense to me. It did not flow, and the different pieces of the story did not really fit well together. I will not be reading this book again.
I received this book for free in return for an honest review.
